DENVER - The University of Denver has been selected as one of six host sites for the 2020 NCAA Regional Championship, the NCAA announced Tuesday. The meet is set for Saturday, April 4, 2020, and is one of six qualifying meets for the 2020 NCAA National Championship.
Joining Denver as regional hosts in 2020 are Auburn, Illinois, UCLA, North Carolina State and Penn State. The top two finishing teams at each regional site advance to the NCAA National Championship. In 2020, NCAA Nationals will be hosted at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas.
DU has hosted NCAA Regionals four times, the last in 2011. At each of the four regional competitions, Magness Arena has welcomed more than 2,500 fans--including more than 3,000 in 2002, 2004 and 2007. In 2007, nearly 3,900 fans attended, becoming what was then the highest-attended DU Gymnastics home meet in school history. The attendance record was broken twice in 2017 during the Pioneers' two regular season meets in Magness Arena with more than 4,000 fans each.
The Pioneers are coming off their first team berth to the NCAA National Championship since 2008, setting a new record for highest score at nationals (196.475) and finishing a program-record ninth overall. One of the team's three previous trips to NCAA Nationals came after hosting regionals in 2007. Denver has qualified to NCAA Regionals in 19 consecutive seasons.
The NCAA announced the host sites for championship competition in 84 sports Tuesday, including women's gymnastics, for the 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 seasons. For women's gymnastics, regionals will be hosted at six different campus locations while nationals will be held in Fort Worth, Texas, in each of the four seasons.
