DENVER – The University of Denver women’s gymnastics team is ranked No. 8 in the NACGC/W Preseason Coaches’ Poll, released on Monday. It marks the highest preseason ranking in program history, besting the Pioneers’ spot at No. 13 ahead of the 2001 season.
Two-time defending NCAA National Champion Oklahoma is No. 1. Florida is No. 2, and LSU rounds out the top three.
DU is the second-highest ranked team in the Big 12 Conference, behind No. 1 Oklahoma. Fellow Big 12 teams West Virginia and Iowa State are outside the top 25, but both received votes.
On Denver’s 2018 schedule are six teams inside the top 25 including No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 7 Michigan. DU will host No. 21 George Washington and No. 24 Southern Utah, and will make trips to No. 13 Boise State and No. 19 Arkansas.
The Pioneers are coming off one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2017 when they advanced to the NCAA National Championships and finished a program-record ninth overall.
DU returns sophomore All-American Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) and seniors Nikole Addison (Fort Myers, Fla.), Claire Hammen (Loveland, Colo.) and Leah Lomonte (Katy, Texas). Joining DU in 2018 are freshmen Lynnzee Brown (Kansas City, Mo.), Emily Glynn (Longmont, Colo.) and Mia Sundstrom (Boulder, Colo.).
Fans’ first chance to see the 2018 Pioneers is Saturday, December 16, at the annual Crimson & Gold Intrasquad set for 6 p.m. in Hamilton Gymnasium. Admission is free and features a scrimmage-type competition with autographs and photos with the team afterward.
Season tickets for the 2018 season are now available online or by calling 303-871-4625. New for 2018, season ticket holders have the opportunity to reserve their seats in Hamilton Gymnasium with chair backs for $45. Season tickets without chair backs are $35. Single-meet tickets begin at $9 and are also available online.
