Pioneers Cruise to 15-10 Win over Aztecs

Feb. 4, 2017

SAN DIEGO - Opening up the 2017 campaign in style, the University of Denver women's lacrosse team had a trio of hat tricks on Saturday in a 15-10 victory over San Diego State. The Pioneers (1-0) improved to 6-0 all-time against their former MPSF foes.

"This was a great start to the season with a road game against an aggressive San Diego State team," said head coach Liza Kelly. "Our attack showed that they are a force to be reckoned with while the defense made some good adjustments throughout the game."

Elizabeth Behrins led the scoring with five goals on five shots, while fellow sophomore Kendra Lanuza added three goals and four helpers for seven total points and Julia Feiss rounded out the scoring with three goals and one assist. Lanuza also finished with three ground balls and two draw controls, while Behrins posted two caused turnovers.

Audrey Schreck had a pair of goals in the win, with Caitlin Derry adding a goal and two assists to Katherine Fischer's lone goal.

Maddy Stevenson took the win while backstopping DU, making five saves over 60 minutes of action as Hunter Gray anchored the defense with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Ellie Knott finished with nine draw controls while Layne Voorhees added four of her own alongside two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.

The Aztecs (0-1) had four goals come from Kristen Hickey, with Kayla Deitz and Vickie Porter both adding two. Katrina Reeves took the loss for SDSU while making 11 saves in 60 minutes of play.

DU recorded the first three goals of the game as Behrins fired home the first two and Lanuza added the third. The Aztecs got on the board at the 23-minute mark on a goal from Deitz, eventually knotting the score at 3-3 behind two from Hickey with 22:25 on the clock.

The Pioneers built the lead back up to 7-3 after spreading the wealth with four different scorers in the span, eventually closing out the half on a 6-1 run capped off by a man-up goal from Derry with 3:35 remaining. Denver went into the locker room up 9-4.

DU kept the momentum on its side to start the second stanza, getting three goals from Lanuza and one from Schreck for a 13-5 lead by the 20-minute mark of the frame.

SDSU made a run near the end of the contest, getting as close as 14-9 with 5:29 to play, but the Pioneers held out for a 15-10 final, claiming their fourth season-opening win under Kelly, first since 2014 (15-4, Colorado).

Denver will stay on the road next week, traveling to Berkeley, Calif., on Friday, Feb. 10, to take on the Bears at 6 p.m. MT.
