March 25, 2016
DENVER – The University of Denver women’s lacrosse team defeated Marquette 11-5 Friday at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The Pioneers are 4-5 on the season and hold a 1-1 record in the MPSF.
Freshman Elizabeth Behrins (Basking Ridge, N.J.) led the Pioneers with her first career hat trick as well as two assists.
“I am so proud of the team today,” head coach Liza Kelly said. “They worked extremely hard, and the energy of the field and on the sideline was awesome.”
Marquette got on the board first as Julianna Shearer scored off an assist from Molly O’Brien 6:14 into the game. Denver responded with a pair of goals. For the third straight game, senior Christa Reese (Lutherville, Md.) tallied the first goal for the Pioneers, finishing an assist from Behrins. Behrins scored a goal of her own 3:44 later off an assist from Kendra Lanuza (Littleton, Colo.) in a freshman-to-freshman goal.
The Golden Eagles regained the lead, 3-2, with back-to-back unassisted goals with 12:45 to play in the first half.
Denver closed out the first half with four goals in the final 6:25. Behrins kicked off the Pioneer run with a free position goal. Molly Danko (Baltimore, Md.) scored her first goal of the season after successfully clearing the ball for Denver, then Riley Eggeman (Mission Viejo, Calif.) finished an assist from Behrins less than a minute later. The Pioneers gained a 6-3 lead at the end of the half as Casey White (Queensbury, N.Y.) scored off an assist from Reese with 0:06 on the clock.
Denver continued its scoring streak in the second half as Lanuza notched back-to-back goals. Lanuza’s first of the game was unassisted 5:01 into the second half, and she converted on a free position attempt 4:08 later for her second goal.
The Golden Eagles halted DU’s six-goal as they scored on a power play opportunity, cutting the Pioneers’ lead to 8-4. Monica Lucas (Kensington, Md.) scored her lone goal of the game on a free position attempt to restore Denver’s lead to five before Shearer recorded her second goal of the game after a DU foul and turnover with 6:31 to play in the game.
Behrins tallied her first career hat trick on an unassisted goal with 3:54 remaining in the game before fellow freshman Audrey Schreck (Charlottesville, Va.) scored with 1:59 remaining, for the final score of 11-5.
The Pioneers struggled with yellow cards, but killed all but one extra-man opportunity for the Golden Eagles.
Goalkeeper Maddy Stevenson (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) made a season-high 10 saves in the win over Marquette. The Denver defense caused 10 turnovers, including four by junior Sybil Pallace (Baltimore, Md.), and prevented easy clears for Marquette, who finished 15-of-24 in the clearing game. Layne Voorhees (Alexandria, Va.) led DU with three draw controls and four groundballs.
The Pioneers will travel to California to take on MPSF opponents Stanford Friday, April 1 at 7 p.m. MT and UC Davis Sunday, April 3 at 2 p.m. MT.
