VILLANOVA, Pa. - The [13/13] University of Denver women's lacrosse program used the one-two punch of senior Emily Conway and sophomore Elizabeth Behrins on Saturday at Villanova Stadium to extend the win streak to five with a 17-10 decision over Villanova.
The duo led Denver (12-2, 6-1 BIG EAST) with 11 combined goals as Conway closed with her first sock trick at six markers, a career best, while Behrins put away five in the win. The sophomore combo of Julia Feiss and Kendra Lanuza took over as distributors as the pair ended with five points on one goal and four assists, while junior Riley Eggeman rounded out the offense with two goals and one assist.
The defense was stifling most of the day with freshman Caroline Wyse and redshirt-sophomore Kennedy Milburn both grabbing two caused turnovers, while senior Maddy Stevenson took the win with seven saves, six ground balls and one caused turnover between the pipes.
The Wildcats (3-11, 1-6 BIG EAST) had two sensational freshmen lead the charge as Katie Comerford tallied four goals in the loss while Kim McDonough added a hat trick. Julia Michaels took the decision with seven saves in all 60 minutes.
Denver was in control for the first half, burying the first three goals of the game on a pair from Eggeman and one from Conway, before Nova potted its first from McDonough at the 24:03 mark to cut DU's lead to 3-1.
The Pioneers pushed the pace through the remainder of the opening stanza, connecting for a 6-1 run as Conway put away the hat trick with 43 seconds on the clock and Feiss added the final say of the half for a 9-2 lead heading into the locker rooms.
Villanova came out swinging in the second half, firing off three straight goals to cut the deficit to 9-5, but the Crimson and Gold steeled themselves to match the Wildcats goal-for-goal through the next 10 minutes of the game for a 12-8 lead with 12:50 remaining.
DU pulled away late as a 4-1 run over the next four minutes put the cushion at seven goals with a 16-9 lead at the 8:13 mark before the defense went on lockdown and limited Nova to one goal through the rest of the game for a 17-10 final.
Behrins put away four goals in the second half for her eighth hat trick of the year and fifth game with at least four goals. The Basking Ridge, N.J., native now has 40 goals on the year for the team lead.
With Denver's win, combined with a Vanderbilt loss to Temple to wrap up Saturday's conference action, the Pioneers have officially clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament set to start in three weeks' time. This is the first year for the Crimson and Gold in the new conference.
DU will have another road contest next week when it faces Georgetown on Saturday, April 22, with opening draw set for 11 a.m. MT on the BIG EAST Digital Network. The contest will break up the second-place gridlock currently plaguing the BIG EAST as Denver, Temple and Georgetown all own 6-1 conference records heading into the penultimate week of regular-season play.
