BIG EAST Release

DENVER – The University of Denver women’s lacrosse team was selected to finish fourth in it’s first season in the BIG EAST in a preseason poll released by the conference on Thursday. The Pioneers garnered 55 total points in the poll, just behind Georgetown with 63.

“We are excited to begin our inaugural season in the BIG EAST,” said head coach Liza Kelly. “This is a highly competitive conference and we are looking forward to proving ourselves.”

Florida was the unanimous choice to win the BIG EAST, taking all nine first-place votes for 81 total points.

In addition to the preseason poll, redshirt-junior Nicole Martindale was named to the preseason All-BIG EAST Team as the Denver representative. Martindale appeared in nine games for the Crimson and Gold during the 2016 campaign and finished second on the team with 32 points (21g/11a).

Florida had the most players on the preseason All-BIG EAST team with six, Connecticut, Marquette and Temple each had two, with Georgetown and Vanderbilt both adding one.

The Pioneers open up the 2017 season on the road as they visit San Diego State on February 4, starting at 1 p.m. MT. BIG EAST play begins on March 19 as Denver hosts Temple at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium starting at 11 a.m. MT.
