Zeman Joins Staff as Volunteer Assistant Coach

Feb. 6, 2018

DENVER— Head coach Liza Kelly has added former Pioneer Megan Zeman to the Denver women’s lacrosse staff, the 12th-year head coach announced Tuesday. Zeman will serve as a volunteer assistant coach and will primarily work with the draw players.

“Z (Zeman) was a part of the first freshmen class that I had when I got here, and she has been around the program since she left, calling broadcasts with Altitude,” said Kelly. “She has coached Team 180, which is a team that we recruited a number of players from, so we have had a close connection with that.

“It’s just really exciting to have someone that cares so much about the Pioneers back on staff.  She’s been working really hard with our draw players and expanding their game and I’m really excited and happy to have her here every day.”

“I feel honored to be able to work with Coach Kelly and the coaching staff,” said Zeman. “I’m excited to be back with the program and I’m excited to learn from this experienced coaching staff. I will mainly be working with the draw kids, but will also be helping out wherever needed. I’m really excited and hope to contribute to the program going forward.”

Zeman attended the University of Denver from 2007-10, appearing in 72 games for the Crimson and Gold.  During her career, she scored 15 goals, had three assists, 67 ground balls, 47 draw controls and 49 caused turnovers.

In 2010, she started all 18 games as a defender and finished fifth on the team in caused turnovers with 17. Prior to that season, she played midfielder, where she was second on the team in ground balls in with 25 and fourth in caused turnover with 15 while starting all 18 games in 2009.

Her sophomore year, in 2008, Zeman was fourth on the team in draw controls with 21, led the team in face-off percentage at .582 (32-55) and was third in shot percentage at .615 (8-13) while playing in all 19 games that season and starting in nine. Her freshman year, she appeared in 17 games, scoring six goals on 13 shots, with a .769 shots on goal percentage (10-13).  That season, she took six face-offs, winning five of them.

As a former player and now volunteer assistant coach, “I think it’s unique in that I took some time away, and although I’ve been announcing their games for the past few years with Altitude, it’s nice to now be field level and to come back. “

“I’ve coached youth and club and I am excited to carry it over to the college level.  Thankfully, I’ve been able to watch this team since I graduated.”

From Littleton, Colo., Zeman attended Mullen High School, where she earned All-America and Rocky Mountain News "Best of the Best" honors as a sophomore and junior. A three-time all-conference honoree, Zeman was named to the all-state team her junior season.

Zeman graduated from Denver with a degree in communications.

The Pioneers open their 2018 season this Saturday at home against [23/RV] Stanford at 1 p.m.  Admission is free.
