Denver Women's Lacrosse Names Team Captains

Aug. 30, 2017

DENVER--Although the University of Denver women's lacrosse season is months away, one order of business has already been determined.

As elected by their teammates, Hanna Bocklet, Caitlin Derry, and Katherine Fischer have been tabbed the 2018 team captains.

Appearing in 22 games throughout her three years at Denver, Bocklet has scored four goals, two of which came in 2017 against Butler.  The senior attacker from Cross River, N.Y., was fifth on the team in shot percentage at .500 in 2017 with two goals off of four shots in seven games. Bocklet was named to the BIG EAST Conference All-Academic Team for the 2016-17 academic year, and the 2016 MPSF All-Academic Team.

"Being named a captain for this team is a tremendous honor and a role I am excited to take on with pride," said Bocklet. "Since my freshman year, I've looked up to our previous team captains so much because they symbolize hard work, determination, confidence, support, and love for the game.  They taught me all the different ways you can earn respect on and off the field, and that's something I've held close to me and have worked at since I got here.

"We've had so many different kinds of strong leaders serve as captains, especially in the class that just graduated, and I am excited for the other captains and myself to step in and fill their shoes."

Derry, a senior attacker from Seal Beach, Calif., has played in 50 games for the Pioneers, with 27 goals and 23 assists in her career. In the 2017 season, Derry had 15 goals and 10 assists, including a game-winner against Georgetown to send DU to the BIG EAST Championship. It was her second game-winner of the year (the other coming against Vermont), and the third in her career. Derry was third on the team in assists in 2017 and tied for third in the number of game-winning goals with two. In 2016, she led the team in assists with 13 on the season, and was fifth in points (20). She was also named to the BIG EAST Conference All-Academic Team for the 2016-17 academic year.

"It's a real honor to follow in the footsteps of some of the greatest leaders," said Derry. "I've learned and experienced a lot from them, and I strive to leave a similarly great legacy as I enter my last year at DU."

Throughout her career at DU, Fischer has played in 36 games, scoring 21 goals and assisting on 10 others.  The redshirt junior attacker scored a goal in 10 games in 2017, with a career-high two goals twice, and registered at least a point in 11. The Upper Nyack, N.Y., native tallied a career-best three points against California last season.  As a starter in 2015, Fischer recorded a team-high 16 caused turnovers, was third in the team in assists with six, and fifth on the team in ground balls with 21. She had nine goals in 2015, with two, two-game goals. Academically, Fischer is majoring in economics and international studies with a minor in business administration, and was named to the BIG EAST Conference All-Academic Team for the 2016-17 academic year.

"It is an incredible honor to be named captain of 30 amazing young women," said Fischer. "Since the days of playing sports as a kid, I've dreamed of being a college captain. In high school, I remember looking up to the captains and seeing how dedicated they were to the success of the team.

"The styles and leadership qualities of my previous captains have varied, but one characteristic stayed consistent, each was able to motivate an entire team to be the best they could be and enjoy the time on the field. One of the foundations to any successful team is the camaraderie in the locker room, and captains before me were all able to bring the team closer each year and motivate them with a common goal.

"I hope that my passion for lacrosse, competitiveness and positive spirit will help  me and my co-captains lead our team to a successful and fun season."

The Pioneers will have nine games throughout October as part of its fall schedule, three of which will be at the Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. DU will open against Regis on Oct. 7 at 10 a.m. MT, will face Colorado on Oct. 21 at 3:30 p.m., and will host the Alumnae Game Oct. 27 at 7 p.m.
