Pioneer Senior Ellie Knott Details DU's Involvement with Race for the Cure

Sept. 29, 2016

DENVER (Ellie Knott) – The University of Denver women’s lacrosse team took part in the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s annual Race for the Cure this past weekend. Since 1982, the Susan G. Komen Foundation has worked to raise funds in support of breast cancer research efforts.

For head coach Liza Kelly’s Pioneers, the cause is one that hits close to home.

Junior Katy Miele lost her mother, Crissy Miele, to breast cancer in July 2010. “Having lost my mother to breast cancer, it means a lot to me that we try to defeat this disease,” said Miele. “If we can all come together to prevent other children from losing their mothers, that would be an amazing gift to the world.

“The thousands of people that came together on Sunday in Denver demonstrated how powerful we can be when we work together. There is tremendous strength in our unity of purpose, and on a more personal note, I’m so grateful to have a team of amazing girls supporting me and supporting this cause.”

In addition to Miele, numerous members of the team have felt the effects of the disease through the experiences of family members and friends alike. Participating in the Race was a way to honor those people as well as encourage team involvement in the DU community.

The Pioneers continue a lasting tradition of raising awareness for breast cancer heading into the 2017 season. Denver will host its annual Power in Pink game during their spring season as the team plans to honor family members and friends affected by the disease. Additionally, fans are encouraged to wear pink accessories in correspondence with the players and coaches.

The date of the game is to be determined and will be announced at a later date.

Denver continues its fall season with an intrasquad scrimmage this Saturday at 12 p.m. MT at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
