Women's Lacrosse Releases 2018 Schedule

Nov. 2, 2017

DENVER-- With the fall-ball portion of the year completed, the University of Denver women's lacrosse team turns its attention to preparing for the upcoming lacrosse season.

Coming off of a 14-4 overall record last season, including a perfect 8-0 at home, Denver will play nine home games and seven road games in 2018. Of those nine home games, five will be against non-conference opponents.

"I think the 2018 schedule will challenge us both in-and-out-of-conference play," said head coach Liza Kelly.  "We have a great mixture of old rivals and new foes."

DU will open the season at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 10, against former conference foe Stanford. The Pioneers last played the Cardinal in 2017, upsetting the 12th-ranked team 10-7 behind Kendra Lanuza and Julia Feiss, who combined for seven goals.

The following Saturday, the Crimson and Gold will be at the University of Louisville. The team will look to make it two straight against the Cardinals after a thrilling 11-10 triple-overtime win in 2017.  Last season, Louisville climbed to No. 5 in the nation in the IWLCA Coach's Poll and earned its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

Other non-conference games include home contests against San Diego State (Feb. 23), Virginia Tech (March 7) and Niagara (March 10), and an away game against Stony Brook on Feb. 25.

Denver will look to make it 6-0 overall against the SDSU Aztecs, which includes a 15-10 victory last season. This will be the second meeting with the Virginia Tech Hokies, who the Pioneers defeated 19-7 in 2007, and were ranked in the top 20 for most of 2017.  The Pioneers last played the Stony Brook Seawolves in 2008, where DU won 15-5.  Last season, Stony Brook won its fifth straight America East Championship and climbed as high as No. 4 in the national polls and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals en route to a 20-2 overall record.

The Pioneers enter their second year in the BIG EAST Conference where DU posted a 7-2 mark last season, advancing all the way to the conference championship.  BIG EAST play begins on the road with back-to-back weekends of road games against Temple (March 18) and UCONN (March 24).  Denver will host Colorado on March 29, before resuming BIG EAST competition at home against Butler on March 31.

Georgetown comes to town for a midweek conference matchup on April 4, and then the Pioneers take to the road to Cincinnati for a weekend contest against the Bearcats on April 7.  The Pioneers will face Villanova in its second-to-last home game on April 13 before travelling to Marquette for a matchup on April 18. DU's last regular season game at home will be April 21 against the defending conference champions Florida, who defeated the Pioneers 18-12 in the BIG EAST Championship last season. The final conference game will be on the road against Vanderbilt on April 28.

The BIG EAST Tournament is scheduled to begin with the semifinals on May 3 and the championship on May 5, hosted by the University of Florida.
