Aug. 9, 2017
DENVER – Fresh off a preseason trip to Breckenridge and Vail, Colo., that was capped off with a 1-0 exhibition win over Northern Colorado, the University of Denver women’s soccer team will host its final exhibition Saturday at 6 p.m. MT at Pioneer Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium against Texas Tech.
The Pioneers and Red Raiders have squared off in exhibitions in the Mile High City every August since the beginning of the 2013 season.
NORTHERN COLORADO RECAP
In their first exhibition tune-up for the 2017 season, sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Wilson (Littleton, Colo.) kept a clean sheet and freshman midfielder Maya Roston (Newport Coast, Calif.) deposited the game-winner into the side netting from inside the penalty area to send Denver to a 1-0 win at Vail Mountain School on Monday.
The Pioneers were able to keep the majority of the possession and had the better of the chances on Monday afternoon in an exhibition between two Colorado Cup Teams that will not meet in the annual tournament in 2017.
Denver will look for its first Colorado Cup crown since 2013 and its first under the current six-team format when the Pioneers open the Colorado Cup on August 18 at Pioneer Field. All six programs will play two Colorado Cup matches during the opening weekend of the regular season as Air Force visits Denver, Colorado heads to tournament mastermind Bill Hempen’s Colorado State and Northern Colorado makes the trip down south to Colorado College.
All six programs will head to CU’s Prentup Field for Colorado Cup Sunday on August 20. Denver will take on Colorado State in the 11 a.m. match. DU’s match will be followed up by Northern Colorado and Air Force, before Colorado takes on Colorado College in the 3:30 p.m. match.
Denver returns six players that scored goals a year ago, including leading point getter and goal scorer Hannah Adler (Oak Park, Calif.). Adler returns to the Mile High City for her sophomore campaign in Denver’s midfield. Senior Makenzie Bothner (Park City, Utah) enters her senior season with 56 CAPS already to her name, and will serve as captain of the Pioneers in 2017.
Other members of the program’s leadership team that will be featured on Altitude this season include Wilson, junior outside back Mary DeWalt (West Bend, Wisc.) and redshirt-sophomore Courtney Coffey (Grand Junction, Colo.).
DENVER’S 2017 FRESHMAN CLASS
In Denver’s exhibition against Northern Colorado on Monday, five Denver freshmen saw action, and played considerable minutes in the 90-minute friendly. Roston scored the game-winner off the bench for Jeff Hooker’s side, and freshmen Meg Halvorson (Englewood, Colo.) and Taylor Parker (Aurora, Colo.) earned a spot in the first Starting XI of the new campaign.
