O’Loughlin Scores Upset Win at ITA National Fall Championships

PALM DESERT, Calif. – The University of Denver’s Julia O’Loughlin and Hada Chang competed in the opening rounds of competition at the ITA National Fall Championships on Wednesday and Thursday.

The DU duo played in doubles, while O’Loughlin also participated in singles action.

O’Loughlin got the ball rolling for Denver at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden by carding a first round win over Eudice Chong of Wesleyan, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 on Wednesday.

Later that day, in doubles action, the pair of Pioneers fell 6-2, 6-3 against fifth-seeded Rosie Johanson and Meghan Kelley of Virginia.

On Thursday, O’Loughlin, who originally entered the singles tournament as an alternate, scored a huge upset victory, taking down No. 7 Sinead Lohan of Miami. Despite dropping the first set, the Highland Beach, Fla., native was able to swing the momentum and take the match, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

O’Loughlin moves on the round of 16, which starts on Friday.
