Women's Tennis Announces Captains for 2018 Season

Dec. 12, 2017

DENVER - University of Denver's head women's tennis coach Christian Thompson announced on Tuesday that seniors Julia O'Loughlin and Gracia Mboko have been named co-captains for the Lady Pioneers' upcoming 2018 season.

"Both O'Loughlin and Mboko have had extensive experience playing and watching college tennis at the highest level," said Thompson. "I know they both have the ability to lead our young team both on and off the court through hard work and are dedicated to continue building our elite program."

O'Loughlin is a three-time All-Summit League Pioneer, who went 20-1 in the No. 1 singles role in 2016, was the 2016 Summit League Women's Tennis Player of the Year and is a 2017 All-American. Last season, along with her partner Maureen Slattery, the duo advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Div. I Women's Tennis Doubles Tournament and posted a program-best winning percentage at 19-3 (.863).

"I am so grateful to have been named a captain of the women's tennis team," said O'Loughlin. "Being a captain is a goal I have strived for since my freshman year and a big accomplishment in and of itself. I look forward to leading this team both on and off the court and hopefully towards a Sweet 16 appearance at the NCAAs."

Last season, Mboko went undefeated in Summit League action, going 2-0 in singles play and 3-0 in doubles. Overall in 2017 the Burlington, Ontario, native went 5-8 in singles action and 8-8 in doubles play. In 2016, Mboko went 5-1 during singles competition and 4-2 in doubles after returning halfway through the season due to injury.

"Being named captain of the Denver women's tennis team is such an honor and means so much to me coming from such talented and respected coaches," said Mboko.  "I am given the opportunity to set an example and lead my teammates while maintaining the legacy and values our program has built and instilled.

"I am going to follow the examples set by our past captains, and from the past three years here at DU, where I have witnessed the progress we have made as a team and know that we have the potential to accomplish so much. I am excited for this upcoming season and eager to see what things we can achieve this year."
