Feb. 24, 2017

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Junior right-side Kayla Principato will take a trip south to the U.S. Olympic Training Center next week as a member of the University of Denver volleyball program to participate in the U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryouts taking place from March 3 to March 5.

The tryouts will be led by three-time Olympic gold medalist and U.S. Olympic Hall of Famer Karch Kiraly and the U.S. Women’s National Team staff.

"We are very excited and proud for Kayla to participate in the 2017 USA National Team Tryout,” said head coach Tom Hogan. "Kayla has been a part of the USA High Performance Pipeline, and she has experience training and competing at the USA Olympic Training Center as a member of our DU Volleyball program.

“Competing against the top players in the country will be a fantastic experience for Kayla as she looks to make a team and represent our country. We wish her the best of luck and know that she will do a great job representing our program.”

The Pioneers have extensive connections with Team USA, as Hogan was an assistant coach on the U.S. Women’s National Team from 2005 to 2008, helping lead the team to a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Assistant coaches Katelin Batten and Jesse Tupac also have coaching connections with Team USA, while volunteer assistant coach Kristen Hahn was a member of the 2014 Women’s National Team that won the gold medal at the World Championship Qualifier and named Best Receiver and Best Libero of the tournament.
