DENVER – University of Denver head volleyball coach Tom Hogan announced the release of the 2017 schedule on Thursday as the Pioneers look to defend their third straight Summit League regular-season and tournament championships this fall. “Our 2017 schedule might just be the most exciting yet,” said Hogan. “We have a loaded non-conference, complete with two 2016 NCAA Semifinalist teams in Minnesota and Texas, and we know those games will jump-start our preparation and competitive mindset heading into the league schedule.”
Denver closed the 2016 slate with a 23-9 overall record and a 13-3 mark in league play, only the second time in school history DU reached the 20-win plateau in three consecutive years with the last time occurring from 1991-93.
Prior to the start of their title defense, the Pioneers will kick off the 2017 campaign with the Crimson/Gold Intrasquad scrimmage at Hamilton Gymnasium on Aug. 19.
Denver will officially start the season on the road with a visit to South Carolina to compete in a four-team tournament hosted by the College of Charleston. DU will take on USC-Upstate, Tennessee State and Charleston starting on Aug. 25.
The first home weekend for the Crimson and Gold will take place at the 2017 Pioneer Classic starting on Sept. 1. Denver will host UC Davis, Niagara and Eastern Illinois in the two-day tournament.
The second road trip for DU will be south to Austin, Texas, to compete in a heavy-hitter tournament hosted by the University of Texas. Denver will tackle NCAA Tournament semifinalist Minnesota before facing NCAA Runner-up Texas on Sept. 7, and will wrap up the tournament on Sept. 8 against fellow NCAA Tournament participant Texas A&M - Corpus Christi.
The final tournament prior to the start of league play will be on Sept. 15 as the Pioneers host Gonzaga, UC Riverside and San Diego State in Hamilton Gymnasium for the 2017 Denver Invitational.
Summit League play will officially begin on Sept. 22 as DU hosts IUPUI to start the quest for a fourth straight league title. The first league road trip will be on Sept. 29 as Denver visits 2016 Summit League Semifinalist North Dakota State.
“From top to bottom, the Summit League will be the most competitive we’ve seen since joining in 2013,” added Hogan. “Several strong teams will have impact players in their senior year and we anticipate many high-level, impressive battles. For us, 2017 will be about reloading and upgrading our current systems, techniques and strategies, harnessing new talent and raising the level of our gym.
“We’ll challenge every player to embrace leadership opportunities, and we’ll push our newcomers to dive in to their DU college experience with passion. We can’t wait to see the future of DU volleyball take shape.”
The Pioneers’ first bout with their 2016 Summit League Semifinal opponent Oral Roberts will be on Oct. 7 in Tulsa, Okla., before the Golden Eagles pay a visit to the Mile High City on Nov. 3 in the penultimate week of league play.
DU will clash with South Dakota in the first rematch of the 2016 Summit League Championship at Hamilton Gymnasium on Oct. 15 before visiting Vermillion, S.D., on Nov. 10 for the final week of league play.
