DENVER— In a final run-through before the start of the 2017 volleyball season, the University of Denver women’s volleyball team held its Crimson and Gold intrasquad scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Gymnasium.

For an hour and a half the Pioneers played four sets, with players trading teams throughout the match. Those in attendance were treated to highly entertaining points and competitive sets, with scores of 25-23, 25-17, 25-20 and 25-14.

“We had a very successful and exciting intrasquad scrimmage,” said head coach Tom Hogan. “We have a significant amount of depth on our team, more than any team I have been a part of here at DU.  Our players are pushing each other every day, and we are making each other better.”

Although a score was kept, the objective of the scrimmage was to use the time to get better, and to replicate live game action as the team prepares to begin non-conference play next Friday against Tennessee State as part of the College of Charleston Tournament in Charleston, S.C.

There were plenty of positives from the scrimmage, from newcomers and returners alike, as there were several spectacular blocks, kills and digs.  However, it was the serving that stood out to the second-year head coach.

“Today, our serving really stood out.  We are constantly ‘fleaning’ the ball and really challenging our serve receive.  Our passers are improving with this challenge, and it’s exciting to see glimpses of our potential this early in the season.”

The Pioneers will play three matches over a two-day span at the College of Charleston Tournament next weekend against Tennessee State, USC Upstate and the College of Charleston.

From there, DU returns home to host the Pioneer Classic Sept. 1 and 2, with the home opener Friday at 6 p.m. against UC Davis.
