Principato Named Summit League Offensive Player of the Week

Aug. 28, 2017

-- After an impressive opening-weekend performance at the Hampton Inn and Suites Classic, which saw the Pioneers go a perfect 3-0, the University of Denver's Kayla Principato was named the Summit League Offensive Player of the Week.

Principato started all three matches for DU, playing in all 11 sets.  Through the three matches, the Rockville Centre, N.Y., native, hit .447 (42-4-85) and led the team in kills and kills per set with 42 and 3.82, respectively.  She had a team-high 10 kills against Tennessee State to pace the Pioneers in the 3-0 win.

She recorded a team-high and season-high 20 kills in the victory against the College of Charleston, which was one shy of tying her career-best. Against the Cougars, she hit .500 with 20 kills, zero errors and 40 total attempts, including two crucial kills in the second set to help DU tie and later fight off set point, allowing the Pioneers to come from behind and win the set 26-24.  She also closed out the match with two-straight kills in the fourth set to secure the victory.

Principato earned the first Player of the Week honor of the year, and the second in her career, as she also took home Player of the Week in October, 2016.  This honor adds to an already impressive list of accolades for the senior, who was named to the Summit League All-League Team in 2015 and 2016, as well as the All-Tournament Team in 2015. More recently, over the summer, the right-side hitter was selected to train and compete as part of the U.S. Collegiate National Team-Minneapolis with Team USA Volleyball.

This weekend, Principato and the Pioneers host the Pioneer Classic with matches against UC Davis (Friday/ 6 p.m.), Niagara (Saturday/11:30 a.m.) and Eastern Illinois (Saturday/ 6 p.m.).
